The law
Is It Legal? The UK Law on Spores.
What UK law says about magic mushroom spores, and why we only sell them for collecting, never for growing.
On this page
We're a UK business and we stick to UK law. We sell magic mushroom spores for collecting, research and microscopy, never for growing. Our grow kits and cultivation supplies are for gourmet and edible mushrooms, which are legal to grow at home. We cancel any order we think could be used to break the law, and we close any account that tries to drag us into something illegal.
Are spores legal?
Yes. Mushroom spores contain no psilocybin or psilocin, so they aren't a controlled drug, and they're legal to buy, sell and own in the UK. What is illegal is growing them into mushrooms. That's why we sell them for collecting, research and microscopy only, and why we won't give anyone advice on growing them.
The law: the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971
Psilocybin and psilocin, the active compounds in magic mushrooms, are Class A drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, the same class as heroin and LSD. Since the Drugs Act 2005, magic mushrooms themselves, fresh or dried, count as a Class A drug too.
- Section 4 makes it an offence to produce a controlled drug or to supply one, or to be involved in either. Growing magic mushrooms is producing them. Selling them, or selling a grow kit that's already growing them, is supplying them.
- Section 8 makes it an offence to knowingly let a property be used to produce or supply one.
- Section 21 means that when a business commits one of these offences, the people running it can be prosecuted personally too.
Producing or supplying a Class A drug can carry life in prison and an unlimited fine. That's why we're as careful as we are.
Gourmet and edible mushrooms
Oyster, lion's mane, shiitake and the other gourmet species we sell kits, spawn and cultures for aren't controlled at all. Growing them at home is completely legal, and none of the rules above apply to them.
Why you might have been sent a link to this page
If you got an email from us that was just a link to this page, it's because an earlier message from you asked about or encouraged something illegal. We can't take it any further, and that decision is final. It's nothing personal: we can't help with anything that crosses that line, even as a joke.
